History
The T-34/85 was a Soviet medium tank introduced in 1944 during World War II as an improved version of the earlier T-34. It was developed by the Soviet Union to better counter newer German tanks like the Tiger II and Panther.
The T-34/85 featured a more powerful 85 mm gun mounted in a larger, three-man turret, which improved both firepower and crew efficiency compared to earlier models. Its sloped armor design remained effective, offering good protection while keeping the tank relatively mobile and lighter than heavy German tanks. This balance of firepower, protection, and mobility made it one of the most effective and versatile tanks of the war.
Unlike more complex German designs, the T-34/85 was simple, rugged, and easy to produce in large numbers. Thousands were built, allowing the Soviet Union to overwhelm enemy forces with sheer quantity as well as capability. It performed well in a wide range of conditions, from muddy terrain to harsh winter environments.
The T-34/85 played a major role in Soviet offensives on the Eastern Front and is widely regarded as one of the most influential tank designs in history, combining practicality with battlefield effectiveness.
