History

The “Königstiger“ (Tiger II) was one of the most advanced and intimidating tanks fielded by Nazi Germany during World War II. Entering service in 1944, it was designed to dominate the battlefield with a combination of heavy armor and devastating firepower.

Weighing nearly 70 tons, the King Tiger had frontal armor up to 150 mm thick, making it extremely difficult for Allied tanks to penetrate from the front. Its main weapon, the long-barreled 88 mm KwK 43 gun, was highly accurate and powerful, capable of destroying enemy tanks like the M4 Sherman and T-34 at long distances.

There were two main turret designs: the earlier “Porsche” turret with a rounded front, and the more common “Henschel” turret with a flatter, better-protected shape. Despite its strengths, the tank suffered from serious drawbacks. Its immense weight made it slow and difficult to maneuver, especially on weak bridges or muddy terrain. It also consumed large amounts of fuel and was prone to breakdowns due to its complex engineering.

Only about 490 Königstiger were produced, and although they were feared by Allied forces, they arrived too late and in too few numbers to significantly change the outcome of the war. Today, surviving Tiger II tanks are rare and can be seen in museums, where they remain symbols of both engineering ambition and the logistical limits of wartime Germany.
