History
The Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero Model 22 was one of the mostimportant fighter aircraft operated by the Imperial JapaneseNavy during World War II. Developed as an improvedversion of the A6M3 Model 32, it combined the powerful Nakajima Sakae 21 engine with restored long-range capability, allowing it to escort bombers and conductoperations across vast distances in the Pacific.
Renowned for its exceptional maneuverability and lightweight design, the Zero was a formidable opponent in the early years of the war. The Model 22 variant featuredfolding wingtips for carrier operations and increased fuelcapacity, improving its effectiveness in long-range missions. It saw extensive service in major campaigns, including the Solomon Islands and New Guinea.
Although later Allied fighters eventually surpassed it in speed, armor protection, and firepower, the A6M3 Model 22 remains one of the most recognizable aircraft of World War II and a symbol of Japanese naval aviation.
