History
The Blitz Truck was a 3-ton military truck that became thestandard transport vehicle of the German Wehrmacht duringWorld War II. It was originally designed in the mid-1930s by Opel, a company then owned by General Motors, and entered mass production in 1937.
Powered most commonly by a 3.6-liter inline six-cylindergasoline engine producing about 75 horsepower, the Blitz could reach speeds of roughly 80 km/h (50 mph) on roads. Both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive (Blitz A) versionswere produced, allowing it to operate in difficult terrain, especially on the Eastern Front.
The truck’s simple, robust design made it easy tomanufacture and maintain. Over 100,000 units were builtduring the war, and the chassis was used for many variants, including troop carriers, cargo trucks, ambulances, radiovehicles, fuel tankers, and even as a base for armored and anti-aircraft vehicles such as the Sd.Kfz. 3 Maultier half-track conversion.
