History

The Higgins Boat, or LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel), revolutionized amphibious warfare during World War II. Designed by Andrew Jackson Higgins, this versatile craft allowed rapid deployment of troops, vehicles, and supplies directly onto enemy shores. It could carry up to 36 soldiers, a jeep, or 8,000 pounds of cargo and featured a shallow draft of just 3 feet, enabling it to operate in minimal water depths. With its 225-horsepower engine, the boat could reach speeds of 9-12 knots and travel up to 100 miles. The reinforced steel bow ramp allowed swift unloading, reducing troops' exposure to enemy fire and improving the chances of successful assaults.

The Higgins Boat became iconic during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, playing a crucial role in the success of the Normandy invasion. It was also essential in the Pacific Theater, supporting operations like the capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. General Dwight D. Eisenhower credited the boat as a decisive factor in the Allied victory, highlighting its impact on amphibious operations. Its legacy endures, symbolizing Allied ingenuity and courage, and its design continues to influence modern military landing craft.
