History

The T-72B (Object 184) entered service in 1985 as a major modernization of earlier T-72
models and became one of the most widely produced late–Cold War Soviet tanks. Its main
improvement was significantly enhanced armor protection, using advanced composite
armor in the turret and hull. Many vehicles were later equipped with Kontakt-1 explosive
reactive armor (ERA), further improving survivability against shaped-charge weapons.
It is armed with a 125 mm 2A46M smoothbore cannon.

The tank uses an autoloader, allowing a 3-man crew (commander, gunner, driver) and a
compact turret design. It carries about 45 rounds of ammunition.
Power comes from a V-84 diesel engine producing 840 hp, giving it a top speed of
around 60 km/h and good mobility for its class. Suspension is torsion-bar based, enabling
decent off-road performance.
