History

The Type 97 Chi-Ha was the most widely used medium tank of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Introduced in 1938, it was designed to provide greaterfirepower and protection than earlier Japanese tanks whilemaintaining the mobility needed for operations across Asia and the Pacific. Its diesel engine, reliable suspension, and relatively lightweight design made it well suited for long-distance campaigns and difficult terrain.

Armed initially with a low-velocity 57 mm gun for infantrysupport, later versions such as the Shinhoto Chi-Ha wereequipped with a more powerful 47 mm high-velocity gun to improve anti-tank performance. The Chi-Ha saw service in China, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and numerous Pacific islands, becoming the backbone of Japanese armored forcesthroughout the war.

Although it was eventually outclassed by newer Allied tankswith heavier armor and more powerful weapons, the Type 97 Chi-Ha remained in frontline service until the end of the conflict. Today, it stands as one of the most iconic Japanesearmored vehicles of World War II and represents the peak of Japan’s wartime tank development.
